Introduction to advertising: blog task

1) What key conventions of an advert can you find and what are the connotations of each one?
Picture of the product(Doritos) make us remember the product and how it looks.
Logo is vibrant, bold and on the product also reminding us of the type of product
The Colour Scheme is black,red,green,white,and yellow. The green and red show different favours and how recognisable the packet of Doritos are.
Anchorage Text show how the made a unique blend and how it is new
The central image of the 2 luchadors connote how the Doritos are spicy but also cool

2) For each convention, write about how this appeals to a target audience. 
The Doritos logo shows the company and make the audience familiar for the brand 
The central image is of the product and the audience might want to buy it
The Colour Scheme is bright and vibrant;may appeal to kids;is very bold and stands out
Anchorage Text shows how it is new and different and unique to other products


3) What is the USP (unique selling point) of the product and how do you know?
The unique USP of the product is the mix of two different flavour in crisp

Reveal: case study blog task

1) How many of the 12 magazine cover key conventions feature on this edition of Reveal? List them with specific reference to the convention on the CSP edition of Reveal.

2) What is the font choice used on the cover and what does this choice connote? 

The use of san-serif connotes that they want to move towards a modern audience

3) How do the cover lines appeal to the Reveal target audience?
They share a glimpse of what the magazine contains. As their audience are low brow it shows how they can learn more and catch the eye of the audience.


4) What are the connotations of the Reveal colour scheme on this particular front cover?

The use of the colours like pink,red and yellow shows that it is made for humour and as bright vibrant colours reinforce the magazine bursting with gossip

5) How are images used to create interest in the magazine? Find three reasons for your answer. (E.g. mise-en-scene such as props, costume and make-up, body position, facial expression).

The actors aren't prepared for the photo which suggests it was the paparazzi that had taken the photos.This creates interest because this highlights how they act outside,when there are no cameras filming them.Their is makeup on most of the women which interest men as they find them attractive.The facial expression of the women on the bottom left interests the reader as she looked shocked or worried therefore they would want to find out why.

6) What differences can you find between the use of design and typography between Tatler and Reveal? List at least three and explain the effect on audiences.
Tatler has one central image whereas Reveal has multiply which shows how many topics reveal cover. Also Reveal has the price tag in bold and a very bright yellow which emphasises how it is affordable for the working class whilst Tatler price is minuscule and is barley visible. The cover lines in Reveal are more direct addressing which shows how they interact with their audience.   


Representations

1) What type of celebrities appear on the front cover? How are they represented in Reveal? (Positive? Negative? Reinforcing or challenging stereotypes?)

The celebrates on are actors on reality TV shows which show that reveal is a low-brow magazine. They reinforce how people like to gossip about celebrates.  

2) How are women represented on the cover of Reveal? Think about both images and cover lines here.

Women are represented as wanting to do better like becoming a mother and going on diet and getting better skin.

3) How do Reveal and Tatler represent social class? (E.g. middle/upper class and working class)

Reveal is represents the working classes as the price is only 99p unlike Tatler which represent the high class as they have disposable income to spend 4.50 on a magazine

4) What would be the preferred and oppositional readings to this cover of Reveal?

The preferred reading to this is that actors aren't the same in real life and that they act completely different when they are not being filmed. 

An oppositional reading to this is that women might get offended by the fact that they are telling them to gain carbs instead of loose them. This is because nowadays being skinny is more attractive therefore they might think they are trying to make them overweight.

Social and cultural context

1) What aspects of British life are reflected in Reveal? How does this compare to Tatler?

Reveal reflects the health and lifestyle and motherhood unlike Tatler who focuses on riches and materialistic items

2) What do the cover lines in Reveal suggest about the issues and lifestyle of Reveal readers?

It suggest that the readers could be unhealthy,overweight,be a mother or be having a child.

Tatler: case study blog

Introduction
1) Look at the Tatler Media Pack. Go to page 2: how does the editor introduce the magazine?
‘‘TATLER IS A FABULOUSLY TARGETED, SENSATIONALLY ACCURATE RIFLE SHOT TO THE VERY RICHEST READERS IN THE COUNTRY. THESE PEOPLE LIVE THE LIFE REFLECTED ON OUR PAGES, BOTH PHYSICAL AND VIRTUAL. AND
BOY, DO THEY LOVE TO SHOP”
The editor introduces the magazine by telling the audience there targets and how sensational the magazine is and the Tatler audience are mostly people with a high social class.

2) Now go to page 4 of the Media Pack. Focus on the print magazine (NOT tatler.com - the website). List the key demographic details: age, gender %, ABC1 % (social class), HHI (Household Income), % of those living in London and the South East. What do these demographic details suggest about the average Tatler reader?

Tatler readers spend a lot of money on fashion and this conveys how much they have to spend 


4) Go to page 10. What are the special editions of Tatler that run throughout the year? What does this suggest about the pyschographic groups who read Tatler?
The special editions are: travel guide, wedding guide,beauty and cosmetic surgery guide, spa guide, watches and jewellery guide and schools guide. The pyschographic are of an aspirer as they want to experience more.



Media language

1) What different examples of typography can you find on the cover of Tatler? What are the connotations of the serif and sans serif fonts? 

San-serif and Serif
That they are keeping their traditions however are becoming modern to fit in with what interest people

2) What do the cover lines suggest about the lifestyle of rich people in the UK?

The cover lines suggest  they mention celebrities names who are famous among young people, to make them interested in buying the magazine

3) What are the connotations of the Tatler colour scheme on this particular front cover?
The Tatler colour scheme show luxury and nature with the green,gold,white. The pink typography might shows romance. 

4) How is the central image designed to create interest in the magazine? Find three reasons for your answer. (E.g. Mise-en-scene such as props, costume and make-up, body position, facial expression)
The central image designed to create interest in the magazine using props like jewellery and golden clothes which conveys wealth.
She has a serious face on to show that the company isn't a fake and its all true.She has a gold necklace to show that Tatler is for the rich.

White Women are represented and celebrities are the groups represented.Posh people are represented as it says "THE NEW POSH"Also uni students because it refers to"the one month gap year"

2) How do the cover lines appeal to the Tatler target audience?

As they are high status celebrates and royalties which the target audience want to hear
That rich people wear a lot of accessories and they attend many parties.

3) Are there any stereotypes being reinforced or subverted? How? Why?

A stereotype being reinforced is that to be beautiful you need to be white , have long hair, have jewellery and have a  hour glass shaped body .

4) What would be the preferred and oppositional readings to this cover of Tatler?
A preferred reading to this cover of Tatler is that to be beautiful you need to look similar to the women in the middle of the magazine . Also that you need to be rich to be apart of the Tatler community.

An oppositonal reading to this cover of Tatler is that some people have different views of what beauty is to them and therefore they wouldn't agree that Georgina bevan is good looking.

Social and cultural context
1) What aspects of British life or people are NOT reflected in Tatler? (Watch the clip above again if you need help with this - the clue is in the title 'Posh People')
None of the normal civilians lives are included in the cover to show the superiority of the upper class and upper-middle class compared to the lives of the people who are middle class or lower.


2) Tatler runs special issues on holidays, spa breaks, cosmetic surgery, watches and jewellery and private schools. What does this suggest about the magazine's representation of life in Britain?

Britain is represented as very enjoyable and that there are lots of things to do.

3) What audience groups might be offended or insulted by the front cover of Tatler April 2017?
it isn't diverse and only represents rich people
