Tatler: case study blog

Introduction
1) Look at the Tatler Media Pack. Go to page 2: how does the editor introduce the magazine?
‘‘TATLER IS A FABULOUSLY TARGETED, SENSATIONALLY ACCURATE RIFLE SHOT TO THE VERY RICHEST READERS IN THE COUNTRY. THESE PEOPLE LIVE THE LIFE REFLECTED ON OUR PAGES, BOTH PHYSICAL AND VIRTUAL. AND
BOY, DO THEY LOVE TO SHOP”
The editor introduces the magazine by telling the audience there targets and how sensational the magazine is and the Tatler audience are mostly people with a high social class.

2) Now go to page 4 of the Media Pack. Focus on the print magazine (NOT tatler.com - the website). List the key demographic details: age, gender %, ABC1 % (social class), HHI (Household Income), % of those living in London and the South East. What do these demographic details suggest about the average Tatler reader?

The average Tatler reader is of a high status and AB social class in London and are mainly females of the age 41. Majority live in London and south east England.



3) Look at page 6. What do Tatler readers think about fashion? How much do they spend?

Tatler readers spend a lot of money on fashion and this conveys how much they have to spend 


4) Go to page 10. What are the special editions of Tatler that run throughout the year? What does this suggest about the pyschographic groups who read Tatler?
The special editions are: travel guide, wedding guide,beauty and cosmetic surgery guide, spa guide, watches and jewellery guide and schools guide. The pyschographic are of an aspirer as they want to experience more.



Media language
Revise the 12 magazine cover key conventions and check how many feature on this edition of Tatler.

1) What different examples of typography can you find on the cover of Tatler? What are the connotations of the serif and sans serif fonts? 

San-serif and Serif
That they are keeping their traditions however are becoming modern to fit in with what interest people

2) What do the cover lines suggest about the lifestyle of rich people in the UK?

The cover lines suggest  they mention celebrities names who are famous among young people, to make them interested in buying the magazine

3) What are the connotations of the Tatler colour scheme on this particular front cover?
The Tatler colour scheme show luxury and nature with the green,gold,white. The pink typography might shows romance. 

4) How is the central image designed to create interest in the magazine? Find three reasons for your answer. (E.g. Mise-en-scene such as props, costume and make-up, body position, facial expression)
The central image designed to create interest in the magazine using props like jewellery and golden clothes which conveys wealth.
She has a serious face on to show that the company isn't a fake and its all true.She has a gold necklace to show that Tatler is for the rich.


Representations
1) What different groups of people are represented on the cover? (E.g. men/women/white people etc. Look at the image and text/cover lines to help here)

White Women are represented and celebrities are the groups represented.Posh people are represented as it says "THE NEW POSH"Also uni students because it refers to"the one month gap year"

2) How do the cover lines appeal to the Tatler target audience?

As they are high status celebrates and royalties which the target audience want to hear
That rich people wear a lot of accessories and they attend many parties.

3) Are there any stereotypes being reinforced or subverted? How? Why?

A stereotype being reinforced is that to be beautiful you need to be white , have long hair, have jewellery and have a  hour glass shaped body .

4) What would be the preferred and oppositional readings to this cover of Tatler?
A preferred reading to this cover of Tatler is that to be beautiful you need to look similar to the women in the middle of the magazine . Also that you need to be rich to be apart of the Tatler community.

An oppositonal reading to this cover of Tatler is that some people have different views of what beauty is to them and therefore they wouldn't agree that Georgina bevan is good looking.

Social and cultural context
1) What aspects of British life or people are NOT reflected in Tatler? (Watch the clip above again if you need help with this - the clue is in the title 'Posh People')
None of the normal civilians lives are included in the cover to show the superiority of the upper class and upper-middle class compared to the lives of the people who are middle class or lower.


2) Tatler runs special issues on holidays, spa breaks, cosmetic surgery, watches and jewellery and private schools. What does this suggest about the magazine's representation of life in Britain?

Britain is represented as very enjoyable and that there are lots of things to do.

3) What audience groups might be offended or insulted by the front cover of Tatler April 2017?
it isn't diverse and only represents rich people

4) Find three other front covers for Tatler. What issues or problems are regularly featured in Tatler?
